“You’re a wizard Harry”. The most iconic line from the popular series, you guessed it…. Harry Potter.
Harry Potter explores the magical world in which we want to live. The new film, Fantastic beasts and where to find them is a split off from Harry Potter featuring Newt Scamander, played by Eddie Redmayne, known also from the films, Jupiter Ascending and Les Miserables. He is on a journey into New York with a suitcase, but no ordinary suitcase. A suitcase that must not be seen by muggles, or perhaps the No-Maj (the American version of muggle.)
Later in the bank, Newt meets Jacob who accidentally finds Newt’s dragon egg which hatches in his hand. Newt meets Tina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston) who is an ex Aurora and works for the Magical Congress of the United States of America. She suddenly realises that Newt has illegally brought magical creatures into New York and that some have gone missing. More importantly, she realises that Jacob is a No-Maj who hasn’t been obliterated (wiped memories) of the event. Tina brings them back to live at her house with her and her sister, Queenie Goldstein (Alison Sudol) because Jacob (Dan Fogler) is now ill. Queenie can read Jacob’s mind which adds a more humorous tone to the film. Jacob must have no memory of his time with magic, otherwise the magical world may be found out.
There is another problem, the Obscurius. It obliterates everything in its path and takes the host of a young child, but we don’t know who this is. No spoilers here!
The film also contains new characters, often called beasts. The naughty Niffler is often caught red handed or is it silver handed? The pesky creature is obsessed with anything shiny. When he escapes into the bank, you could imagine he makes pretty short work. The Niffler is often found hiding by Newt, even pretending to be a jewellery stand in a shop window. Throughout the film we grow personal attachments to the beasts. Some adorable and others scary. The start of the film has a humorous tone, which contrasts with the serious ending. Watch to find out.
This film only contains a few links to the original series, mentioning Albus Dumbledore and the Lestrange family and obviously Grindelwald himself. Furthermore, David Yates chose not to use Jamie Campbell Bower who originally played Grindelwald in the Harry Potter series. David Yates said to “Go for the most inspired, interesting, right fit for that character” and this was Johnny Depp. Although to the disappointment of many fans, (including myself), Depp had only a minor appearance in the film.
Yates has said that Depp will appear more in the sequel to Fantastic beasts and that Percival Graves will appear in the second movie as a hero. This will be an exciting twist in the plot for many audiences and the appearance of Johnny Depp as Grindelwald will excite audiences everywhere.
The film was highly enjoyable and I would recommend it to anyone, especially if you loved the Harry Potter series. Not one to miss!
