You will study topics which examine many elements of sport including:

  • Anatomy and physiology

  • Fitness training and programming

  • Sports leadership

  • Professional development in the sports industry

  • Instructing gym based exercise

  • Application of fitness testing

  • Coaching for performance


A minimum of a Grade 4 in GCSE PE or a pass in a vocational equivalent. You will also need one Grade 3 within GCSE Combined Single/Combined Science grades or a pass in a vocational Level 2 Science qualification.

The Certificate/Extended Certificate will be taken alongside 2 other subjects and will provide a sport element within a broad programme. It will give you a basic understanding of sport principles alongside your 2 other chosen subjects. ICT is used to support students in their work and the sports facilities available are outstanding, including a Fitness Suite, state-of-the-art Sports Barn, Sports Hall and Fitness Lab. 

Assessment is by coursework.

Please note the awarding body for all BTEC qualifications recently made the decision to extend the current BTEC courses in our offer beyond 2018. This means that for 2018 entry, all Level 3 vocational subjects will continue to be assessed by coursework only, with the exception of Art and Design.

There is potential for you to progress on to a wide range of university degrees leading to careers in sports coaching, sports development, teaching, leisure centre management and gym instruction.
