Young Carers

At Huddersfield New College we aim to do everything possible to ensure that all young people have the right to a good quality education, regardless of individual circumstance.

YOUNG CARERS

Young Carers are young people who carry out caring tasks and responsibilities, over and above those appropriate for their age.  The cared-for person (family member) they look after may have:

  • Physical disability
  • Mental health issues
  • Learning difficulties
  • Alcohol or drug misuse
  • Long term illness

 

Young Carers’ responsibilities may include: 

  • Personal care  
  • Responsibility for medicines
  • Shopping
  • Household tasks
  • Emotional support
  • Looking after younger siblings
  • Financial responsibility

 If you are Young Carer at Huddersfield New College there may be significant obstacles to your educational success and progression. We aim to help and support you through these obstacles so that you have the best chance at success.

  • Student Support Manager – Samantha Wilkinson – Young Carer Co-ordinator
  • Open Door – Megan Sheils - Student Health and Wellbeing Manager
  • Progress Tutors – Each student is allocated a progress tutor on enrolment and they will help and support you when necessary  

 

What we will do to support Young Carers:   

  • Share appropriate information with staff to enable them to support and teach you effectively and remove or minimise any barriers you may face to education
  • Monitor attendance and be an advocate on behalf of the young carer
  • Liaise closely with progress tutor to ensure sensitive and effective support   
  • Complete simple assessments to see what type of support is needed  
  • Ensure a smooth transition and induction for the students, into college life
  • Ensure confidentiality for individual students and only share personal information on a need to know basis
  • Transport support  
  • Careers Advice
  • Open Door and Mentoring  
  • Financial Support  
  • Access to open evenings and college events for family members (including the cared for person) by providing alternative arrangements 
  • Meet termly to talk to other young carers and gain group support  
  • Trips out for respite and enjoyment
  • Events organised internal and external to college with universities and other organisations   
  • Liaise with external agencies to gain additional support outside of college
  • Provide outside respite events with external agencies and other local colleges and young carers
