Huddersfield New College

Huddersfield New College is the:

First Sixth Form College to be judged Outstanding under the new Ofsted Inspection framework

First Sixth Form College to be judged Outstanding for the Personal Development, Behaviour and Welfare of students

First College nationally to be judged as having ‘no significant weaknesses’

Huddersfield New College is the FIRST Sixth Form College locally and nationally to be judged Outstanding since the introduction of the new Inspection framework in September 2015, and the FIRST to receive an Outstanding grade for the new aspect of this framework, the Personal Development, Behaviour and Welfare of students. The new framework is extremely rigorous and the bar for Outstanding is set exceptionally high. The 4 strong team of Her Majesty’s Inspectors spent 4 days in the College in April carrying out a full Inspection. They judged the College to be Outstanding in every area:

  • Outcomes for Learners Outstanding Grade 1
  • Teaching, Learning and Assessment Outstanding Grade 1
  • Personal Development, Behaviour and Welfare Outstanding Grade 1
  • 16-19 Study Programmes Outstanding Grade 1
  • Leadership and Management Outstanding Grade 1
  • Overall Effectiveness Outstanding Grade 1

The Inspectors did not identify any areas in which the College needed to improve further – another FIRST.

The Inspectors noted the College’s many Outstanding strengths and these include:

  • A culture established by the Principal in which staff and learners flourish and grow
  • The highly skilled leadership team who have worked assiduously to create an outstanding learning experience for learners
  • The rich and varied curriculum
  • Outstanding learner outcomes, and very high success rates
  • Excellent learner progress
  • High quality teaching, learning and assessment
  • Enthusiastic, creative and thoughtful teachers, who have high expectations of their learners. As a result, learners develop a love of learning, produce high quality work and are proud of their work

  • The exemplary range of strategies to promote personal development. Learners develop into confident, articulate and respectful young adults who are well prepared for their next steps
  • Excellent progression to Higher Education, employment and training

  • Strong financial health despite much reduced funding and continued investment in a high quality learning environment and in high quality resources that support learning both inside and outside the classroom
  • Transforming the lives of the young people who attend

Principal Angela Williams said:

“I am extremely proud of our students and their families, our staff and our Governors who have all played their part in helping the College to attain Outstanding. It has taken years of hard work to remain highly inclusive and to become one of the best Sixth Form Colleges in the country and we fully intend to continue to work hard to stay Top of the Class and to transform even more lives.”

Chair of Governors Linda Summers added:

“All the students and staff at Huddersfield New College go the extra mile and, between them, they achieve outstanding results. The Ofsted Inspectors recognised that our students achieve outstanding outcomes and develop into confident and respectful young adults. This reflects a team effort by students, staff and managers, and the governors are immensely proud of them all.”

James Kewin Deputy Chief Executive of the Sixth Form Colleges Association commented:

“Huddersfield New College is the first Sixth Form College to be judged as Outstanding by Ofsted under its new inspection framework. This is a huge achievement and reflects the exceptionally high standard of education offered by the College, and the outstanding results achieved by students."
