The topics studied in this qualification will provide you with a solid introduction to Applied Business and enable you to investigate real- life businesses and scenarios. This dynamic subject will see you learn about a range of core business related topics, including:
- Exploring a business
- Developing a marketing campaign
- Personal and business finance
- Recruitment and selection
An enriching experience
Studying Applied Business at HNC is an enriching experience. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to develop your skills and interests, broadening your horizons and building your cultural capital. These experiences are integral to life at HNC and will help you to stand out from the crowd. Some of the experiences our Applied Business students enjoy include:
- Work placements, including to international destinations and the chance to work in overseas locations. This year students have travelled to Malta and Valencia. This included work experience placements with international brands such as Zara
- A chance to take part in national competitions, such as the Young Enterprise challenge
- Connections with leading employers including PwC, with the potential to secure an internship or degree level apprenticeship
- The opportunity to put your skills and knowledge into action, including as a Business Ambassador hosting College events
Through your experience of practical activities and academic theory you will develop your self-confidence and communication skills. Inside the classroom you’ll enjoy a variety of learning methods, including group work, role play and presentations, which will develop your work- based skills such as teamwork and communication – all of which are essential in the world of work.

Our modern spacious classrooms provide a great place to learn, and you’ll be able to explore the application of Business in a real-life context in a wide variety of ways – we regularly welcome Alumni and high-profile guest speakers. You’ll be given the chance to put your skills into action in a real-life context. This will include organising a large-scale event within College, planning every stage and marketing this – this year’s Applied Business students raised money for our Charity of the Year through a dynamic Easter themed event.
How will you be assessed?
This course is assessed via presentations, group work, assignments, and externally assessed exams.
Students who gain this qualification progress on to a wide range of destinations, and the opportunities you can experience are vast. There are naturally progression routes within the industry – there are not many careers that our Applied Business qualification does not support! Your future career path will determine the level of business you study, but there are not many fields that do not benefit from the wide range of skills and knowledge you will develop. Our students progress on to a wide range of fields, often opting for related degrees such as Accountancy, Law, Marketing, Creative Branding and HR. However, students have also successfully secured competitive degree level apprenticeships too.
