Our BTEC Level 3 Creative Digital Media (Digital Games) qualification is available as a number of options. Your choice will depend on your future career plans and how much of the technical aspects of Digital Games you wish to study. This qualification supports a huge range of careers in the Creative Media industries, and progression to degree level study.
Do you have a keen interest in Games Design, Media and Art and want to develop this interest and apply your skills in a technical capacity? This course will see you enjoying a range of experiences that see you applying these interests, whilst developing highly valuable communication and industry based skills, as you write proposals and pitches for your games commissions.
If you want Games Design to form more of your study programme, and have ambitions to work in the industry, this 2 A Level equivalent course is for you. In addition to the foundation topics in the 1 A level equivalent, you will deepen and extend your knowledge through additional topics.
Grade 4 in GCSE Media Studies and/or GCSE Art is desirable. General entry criteria also applies.
The topics you study will prepare you for a varied range of roles and degree level courses. You will explore the following topics:
• Digital games production and media skills
• 3D environments
• Game engine scripting
• App production
• Media enterprise
• Digital media skills
• Responding to a commission
Our dedicated Games Design experts will help prepare you for a future in the industry by helping you to develop your technical skills using the latest industry standard software including 3D Autodesk Maya and Unreal Engine 4.
This is a highly interactive course, and you will benefit from the input of our visiting industry speakers and events such as our annual Games Design exhibition, where you will develop a project to a professional standard and showcase this at our exhibition.
All of our students are encouraged to prepare for their future success by undertaking additional qualifications such as Microsoft Office Specialist and CISCO.
Through your experience of practical activities and theory you will develop your self-confidence and communication skills. Group work, role plays and presentations will offer you the chance to develop as a student and prepare you for your next step.
You will also enjoy an annual visit to the Animex Animation and Gaming Festival where you will be able to enjoy talks from industry experts and see the latest developments and opportunities in the industry
Assessment is via presentations, group work and assignments and externally assessed exams. Your work will be graded at pass, merit or distinction giving you an overall grade at the end of the course.
This course supports a wide range of creative media progression routes. Our student move on to degree courses such as Computer Games Art, Games Design, Media Studies, Games and Animation Production and Media Production. Students also progress to Degree Apprenticeships and as trainees with the industry.
