HNC Library is always striving for ways to show that it is more than a room full of books. Besides the 40+ journals, 40+ online resources, 3000 strong eBook collection and Library iPads available for online research, its latest approach brings together the students, library staff and facilities for an engaging library experience.
As part of this drive, Huddersfield New College Library has been offering our students the opportunity to volunteer and gain some valuable work experience. Since it’s launch in September 2012, it’s proven a popular scheme, with nine students taking part last year and eleven student volunteers this current academic year.
Kar Lai, Colette, Denise, Nathan, Ellie, Bailey, Umi, Lauren and Paisley achieved their V10 certificates for their help, and Samantha, who volunteered for the scheme throughout her time at the college, gained her V50 certificate, a fantastic edition to her CV and an achievement to really be proud of. To celebrate their achievements and show appreciation for their help, a special lunch, attended by Principal Angela Williams and College Librarian, Rebecca Wilson was held.
All of our students who took part have gained a better understanding of why and how the Library is organised the way it is. Many have used such knowledge to benefit their studies by discovering and using books and journals as research sources.
This year’s intake of volunteers have proven beneficial to the running of the library and shows that HNC students are more than happy to contribute to the college community. The scheme will continue next year – with some of the current team members beginning their final year – and the volunteers scheme is always open for more students to join in throughout the year.
HNC Library has yet again shown that as well as visiting and leaving with a good book and lots of research material, students could also leave the college with a unique and excellent volunteer experience that will benefit them in the work place or at University.
