Sally Wainwright, the BAFTA nominated writer and playwright, held a fantastic talk, followed by a question and answer session for our film and media students in June.
Sally, who has written for numerous shows, including Coronation Street, was on hand to discuss working on, and directing, shows such as Happy Valley and Last Tango in Halifax, her love for writing dialogue and how she got her first break. She also gave us a taster of what her new projects are! Most importantly, she advised students on the specifics of how to get a 'leg up' in the media world.
Industry talks are incredibly important, as it gives our students a taste of what’s to come in their future careers. Sally’s talk was fantastic, and our students learnt about the tenacity required to be a success, how they should have at least one script fully completed to use as their 'calling card', the pros and cons of collaborating with others and the importance of getting as much experience as possible.
Event organiser and Media Teacher, Gary Eastwood said, “It is fantastic that someone of Sally's stature came to speak to some of our students despite a very busy schedule. It just goes to show she is a proper Yorkshire lass and has not forgotten her roots! The students were both captivated and inspired in equal measure by her honesty and creativity. She has already agreed to come back next year.”
We look forward to welcoming you back soon, Sally!
