October saw Shadow Education Secretary, Tristram Hunt, and Labour Colne Valley Candidate, Jane East, visit New College for a 'first time voter' question and answer session.
As many of our students will be eligible to vote in the next General Election, the opportunity to find out more about politics, and the options open to them, was invaluable. Both Labour representatives were hoping to engage the young voters into action in time for the next election, as many 18-24-year-olds do not vote; just 44% of 18–24-year-olds voted in the last General Election.
During the questions and answer session, Mr Hunt and Ms East answered students’ questions relating to education, the EU, the environment, and lowering the voting age to 16.
As always, we enjoyed hosting the question and answer session!
