Following the success of Huddersfield Town this week, there has been more great news for football after Huddersfield New College’s Women’s Football Academy secured a historic cup and league double.
After last week’s Association of College’s (AoC) National Cup success, the team played against Sheffield College to decide the AoC Category 3 League title. With a game in hand and points already secured, HNC needed a draw to secure the title while Sheffield needed to win to keep their title hopes alive.
HNC started with a two goal lead with goals from Ellie Womersley and Emma Sangster. Sheffield drew 1 back and at half time the game hung in the balance at 2-1 in HNC’s favour. Emma Sangster’s hat trick with a further 2 goals meant HNC led 4-1.
Sheffield brought the game to 4-3 before a further and ultimately decisive goal from Tara Duce sealed the game for HNC. A consolation goal for Sheffield at the whistle meant that the HNC Women’s Football Academy sealed an historic double win.
Jamie Marsden, Director of Sport and Academies comments: “What a week for football in Huddersfield! Our Women’s Football Academy team are incredibly talented, and the double win is a first for our Football Academy programme in its 19 year history. Huddersfield has a Premier League football team and we are delighted that our Women’s Football team are also making history and absolutely playing at the top of their game. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for our team!”
