Huddersfield New College has announced that John Culpan, a first year Sport and Exercise Science student and member of the Talented Athlete Support Scheme, (TASS) has been selected for the Great Britain Junior Academy Cycling Team.
John will now combine his studies with training at the Velodrome five times a week, and he will race for team GB in a range of international competitions. With a demanding training schedule, John hopes to continue his high flying performance and progress to the Great Britain Senior Academy Cycling Team. His achievement is even more remarkable as John is a type one diabetic, and manages his blood sugar and insulin levels whilst racing and training.
Peter Lombard, Head of the TASS programme says: “We’d like to congratulate John on this amazing achievement. John is an exceptionally promising young rider, and even more so as he not only manages his punishing training schedule alongside his studies, but also as type one diabetic. The TASS programme supports students to combine their academic studies with their passion and talent for their chosen support. We look forward to seeing John in his full GB kit next month when he receives it, and of course achieving his personal ambition of being one of the first diabetic riders to compete in the Tour de France in the future!”
