Huddersfield New College has announced that the College’s Sports Ambassador team has been shortlisted for The Katelyn Dawson Community Award in the Examiner Schools Awards 2019.
The award recognises groups or individuals who play an active role in their local community. The College’s Sports Ambassadors inspire children, young people and adults to enjoy the benefits of sport and get active - all by volunteering their time in a variety of ways.
As a team, they volunteer over 800 hours of their time coaching primary school children alone. The Ambassadors have to apply for these prestigious roles, and receive professional level training which supports them to work in partnership with organisations such as the Pennine Sports Partnership to deliver fantastic events including the Primary School Games which sees over 200 Year 6 school pupils enjoying getting active at a special day hosted at HNC. They also officiate at events including the Schools Games.
Jo Caton, Teacher of Sport and Sports Ambassador programme lead says: “As volunteers, our Ambassadors give hundreds of hours of their time in a huge range of ways all of which inspire others about the difference sport and being active can make to their lives. Their work goes far beyond their activities at College, with many also volunteering in local clubs, care homes and hospitals. This enables them to gain crucial skills such as leadership, coaching and confidence - all highly valuable skills that will support them now and in the future. They are also of course also making a genuine difference in their local community through sharing their own passion for sport. I am really looking forward to the ceremony in a few weeks and discovering if the team are this year’s winners!”
