Huddersfield New College has revealed that it is encouraging students to enjoy a summer break with a difference by applying for an prestigious Summer School experience that could help them to achieve their ambitions and boost their chances of securing a place at a leading university.
HNC is currently helping students to explore the potential of two separate schemes run by the Nuffield Foundation and The Sutton Trust.
The Sutton Trust helps students to experience academic taster sessions across over 40 different courses from Archaeology and Anthropology to Veterinary Medicine. With over 15 hours of teaching at undergraduate level, students get the chance to really explore their subjects and gain a flavour of what life at university is like. These are hosted at world- leading universities including the University of Oxford.
HNC is also supporting students to apply for the highly prestigious Nuffield Foundation STEM placements. Based around the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths subject areas these see students challenged in their relevant areas and enjoying exciting projects such as programming a computer or analysing big data from car test rigs. With only 1200 placements every year these help students to stand out in their university applications.
Today David Ward (pictured above) from the Nuffield Foundation visited to talk about the student information sessions HNC is running on 11th February and 13th February to help students to explore what a placement can do for their future and how they can maximise their chance of a successful application.
Scott Townshend Aspire Programme Lead says: “Attending a Summer School can make that vital difference to a student’s success, and genuinely gives them the competitive edge when applying for world leading universities. Previous applicants have often reported that their interviewing tutor has remembered them from a Summer School, and it has been a key driver in their final offer. More widely, the experience helps our students to really explore their future subject and take their knowledge to the next level. We’ll be supporting our interested students to apply for placements relevant to them.”
Dr Joe Norton, who leads the Nuffield Foundation opportunities comments: “There are just over 1200 placements across the UK, and we have a strong track record of students successfully securing a placement. Our students have enjoyed some amazing experiences and have been really inspired about the career opportunities available to them in the STEM sectors. We work closely with the Foundation to help our students understand how they can apply for a place and use their summer break to make their future applications stand out. Interested students can attend our lunchtime session to discover more.”
HNC students have received a range of information and advice about the programmes and can see Scott Townshend about the Sutton Trust and Joe Norton about the Nuffield Foundation placements.
