Huddersfield New College has hosted a special celebration this week to mark the success of students in the prestigious Senior Mathematical Challenge hosted by the UK Mathematics Trust.
2020 has been HNC’s most successful year yet in this national competition. The Senior Mathematical Challenge is a 90-minute, multiple-choice competition aimed at students across the UK. Taking part requires mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems and challenges and extends student knowledge beyond their studies.
To recognise the highest performers in the Challenge, the UK Mathematics Trust awards the top-scoring 60% of participants Bronze, Silver and Gold certificates. From this, the highest performing students are invited to take part in the Senior Kangaroo Challenge.
Yesterday a number of students celebrated achieving national recognition at a pizza presentation ceremony with Principal Angela Williams. This year 23 bronze, 12 silver and 2 gold certificates were awarded following students successfully taking part in the competition.
Four students – James Oldroyd, Catherine Rimmer, Tee Powley and Elizabeth Tiplady – were entered into the Senior Team Challenge and James and Charlotte Smith were also entered into the Senior Kangaroo Challenge, receiving merit and qualification respectively. James and Charlotte were both gold certificate recipients.
Catherine Ward, Teacher of Mathematics comments: “This is a tough competition, and enables students to really put their skills and knowledge to the test in a fast paced and exciting environment. They are up against thousands of other students and taking part is a lively and stimulating experience. It’s a tough competition which recognises the very best – gold certificate winners are in the top 5% of those who actually receive a certificate, and those who go on to the Senior Kangaroo Challenge are even more elite, being in the top 2%. This year has been our most successful yet!”
Angela Williams OBE, Principal says: “It was a pleasure to join the celebration and help present so many certificates! Only 60% of the very top performers in the whole competition receive an actual certificate, and our record breaking number of students receiving one reflects how our Mathematicians are excelling. I would like to congratulate James and Charlotte in particular for reaching the invitation only Senior Kangaroo Challenge. This is a great example of how our students enjoy some unique opportunities beyond the classroom.”
