Huddersfield New College has announced that applications are now open to Year 12 students interested in leading Student Voice and standing out from the crowd in the future by becoming a Head Student.
Last year the College introduced two new leadership positions – Head Student (General College Life) and Head Student (Curriculum) with each given responsibility for representing students on various aspects of College life. Two Deputy Head Students were also appointed as part of the application process. The current team are pictured above from L-R Zoe Wostenholme (Head Student), Ziyaad Lambat (Deputy Head Student), Emily Drake-Brockman (Deputy Head Student) and Charlotte Beeden (Head Student).
Over the term of office the group have made a difference to the wider student experience in a range of ways including through leading a College Green Group and helping the College community to become a more environmentally friendly one, interviewing and meeting staff applying for senior positions and speaking at a range of public events about their experience.
Students fulfilling these prestigious positions are given a range of support and specialist training to help them to succeed, including in developing public speaking skills. Students have today received a special email sharing more about this exciting opportunity.
The current Head Student team are preparing for their next steps after HNC, and applications are now open to new recruits. This will also allow the outgoing team to mentor and support the new team before they graduate from College.
Lee Goddard, Assistant Principal says: “Our inaugural Head Student team have had a real impact at HNC, particularly in helping us to engage our community in our Green Pledge. Experiences such as speaking in front of hundreds of guests at our Open Events have really helped them to stand out in their university applications and more importantly their feedback, ideas and activities have made a difference to the experiences of our wider student body. We look forward to working with our new recruits who will play a key part in making HNC an even better place to study.”
Zoe Wostenholme, Head Student says: “My advice to anyone thinking about applying is just do it! I have loved my time as a Head Student and have enjoyed so many experiences from speaking at Open Events to meeting a Duchess and working in a professional capacity with staff to help the College become greener. It’s not essential to be super confident or to have been a Head Student before - you are given plenty of support. The interview process alone boosted my confidence and I would encourage students to think about what they have to offer and how they can benefit and get involved!”
