Huddersfield New College has revealed that current student Emma Williams has achieved Gold in her Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Award. Emma has not only completed her Gold in under two years, she is also the first student to achieve DofE Gold at this prestigious level since the College became a licensed centre.
To recognise Emma’s special achievement she was presented with a certificate by Marcus Smith-Connor, Vice Principal and Duane Laverick, who runs the DofE programme within College. Emma will be invited to join a Royal reception at some point in the near future and be formally presented with the award by a member of the Royal family. All students at Huddersfield New College have the opportunity to undertake their DofE Award, and as a dedicated centre, students can complete it at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels. Gold is the final tier in the programme, and requires the most commitment and time out of all three levels. Emma has undertaken a wide range of activities to challenge herself from inspiring young children by volunteering at ParkRun, to working at a holiday camp running activities and taking part in a tough expedition in the North York Moors.
Duane Laverick, DofE Lead comments: “Completing the Gold Award is a very special achievement and is certainly not easy! It is fantastic to see our DofE participants grow in confidence and gain essential life skills such as resilience, problem-solving, team working, communication and the motivation to overcome a challenge and achieve something special. In recognition of how challenging it is, Gold participants are given up to their 25th birthday to complete the award. I would like to congratulate Emma on this very special achievement.”
Marcus Smith-Connor, Vice Principal says: “Here at HNC we are proud to offer our students a wide range of enrichment opportunities that help them to enjoy experiences that cannot be found in the classroom and support them to become work-ready, well rounded and resilient young adults. Our DofE programme is a unique and challenging experience, and having achieved Gold Emily will certainly stand out from the crowd as she prepares to progress to her next steps.”
