Huddersfield New College has revealed that from Monday 28th September students can join a series of virtual events and competitions to celebrate National Inclusion Week.

The theme for 2020 is ‘Each One, Reach One’ and focusses on the opportunities we all have to connect with other people.

As the Number One Organisation in the UK for Equality and Diversity, HNC enables students to celebrate their own unique differences and develop their own understanding of why valuing the differences of others is so important. During the week the College community will be inspired with ways to explore what it means to be part of an inclusive and diverse community, and understand the support available at College and beyond:

To help students to understand how they can reach out, and to celebrate how HNC is an inclusive place to study, a number of themed days will be taking place as follows:

  • Monday: Apply to become a Student Diversity Champion

The Student Diversity team is key to developing the College’s inclusive and diverse environment, and play a key role in celebrating the College’s approach and promoting this to peers in College and the local community. As a Champion, students are responsible for sharing ideas for themed weeks, and take responsibility for organising and hosting a variety of events. On this day students are encouraged to consider applying for one of these prestigious positions. You can access our special news story on this here

  • Tuesday: Competition time!

Students are invited to tell us what inclusion means to them by completing the sentence: ‘Inclusion is/means……….’ (Max 100 words)

  • Wednesday: Help at HNC

Today the College will share more about the assistive technology available to all such as  ‘Texthelp Gold’ read aloud proof-reading software which is available on all PCs across Campus.

  • Thursday: Black History Month: ‘Hidden Figures’ competition

October marks Black History Month. HNC is proud of our partnership with Kirklees based organisation ‘Conscious Youth’ and the ‘Back to Our Roots’ programme and on Thursday students are invited to write an entry about a ‘Hidden Figure’ from a BAME background (such as lawyers, composers, athletes, scientists, artists….100 words, max)

  • Friday: LGBTQ inclusion

HNC is a Stonewall College Champion, and holds the Stonewall Bronze Award whilst working toward the Silver Award. Today students will have the chance to learn about the College's  LGBTQ ‘yOUTh’ Group who meet weekly.

Erika Montgomery, Director of Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Engagement comments: “Although the current pandemic means we cannot meet face to face as a whole community at the moment, here at HNC we remain passionate about ensuring that our young people understand that they are unique, but never alone. Taking part in National Inclusion Week allows us to help our young people to understand and explore the differences of others, and celebrate these, whilst understanding where they can reach out for support. Although our opportunities to meet as a large and vibrant community are limited due to circumstances, we are determined that our programme of events and opportunities to learn more about why an equal and diverse society is so important will continue. We cannot wait for another busy week of celebrations!”
