Huddersfield New College has announced that two members of the College’s Cricket Academy have been awarded Emerging Players Programme (EPP) Contracts for Yorkshire CCC for Under-18 Cricket – their first step into professional cricket.
Hot on the heels of the news that HNC has been named as one of the top 100 Cricket Schools in the UK by leading publication The Cricketer, Matthew Weston and Benjamin Cliff are both celebrating landing these prestigious contracts which act as a springboard into professional cricket.
Matthew is a Year 12 student, whilst Benjamin is a Year 13 student and captain of HNC’s 1st Cricket Team. Both students now have lots of hard work ahead of them as they train and hopefully get ready to secure professional contracts in the long term.
Pete Lombard, Cricket Coach says: “Our Cricket Academy continues to go from strength to strength, supporting some exceptional cricketing talent who combine their passion for their sport with their studies. Each member of our Academy not only attends their subject sessions, but professional coaching sessions which nurture their talent. This is a real double celebration for the Cricket Academy as Matthew and Benjamin have both secured these prestigious contracts. We are very proud of both of them, and can’t wait to see how their professional careers unfold!”
Richard Damms, The Yorkshire County Cricket Club’s Academy Head Coach comments: “It’s always an exciting time of year because, if everything goes to plan, we get players promoted into the rookie system. The first two sessions will be physical screening and mental skills profiling days. Following these, the players will receive bespoke individual programmes from our athletic performance team. The cricket will start the week after with one to ones, providing opportunities for specific technical development. In and amongst this, players compete for an Academy spot. They work through the Emerging Players Programme, then the Scholarship and then into Academy – after this it is hopefully senior Academy followed by junior professional and staff contracts!”
