Huddersfield New College students and staff have been running, walking, riding and wheeling as part of the College’s Huddersfield to Huddersfield (Jamaica) challenge. One student has decided to go one step (or more accurately, many thousands of steps!) further by signing up to the ‘Walk All Over Cancer’ challenge in March.
Year 12 student Sophie Caine has been walking regularly as part of the HNC challenge, and has now signed up to Cancer Research’s ‘Walk All Over Cancer’ challenge. Sophie, who is studying A Level Philosophy, Religion and Ethics, A Level Sociology and BTEC Psychology, has now committed to walk 10,000 steps every day throughout March and is aiming to raise £500 for Cancer Research UK.
HNC has launched a range of Covid-19 secure enrichment opportunities that can be completed virtually to help students stay active and engaged throughout lockdown. The Huddersfield to Huddersfield (Jamaica) challenge aims to see the College community travelling the distance from Huddersfield UK, to our namesake Huddersfield in Jamaica. All students and staff are being encouraged to get away from their computers and contribute some steps to the challenge – and invest in their own physical and mental well-being in the process.
Inspired by how getting active has made her feel, and by her Grandad, Sophie has set herself the challenge of walking 10,000 steps every day throughout March.
Sophie says: “I will be walking 10,000 steps every day throughout March and I’m aiming to raise £500 for Cancer Research UK in honour of my late Grandad who lost his battle to pancreatic and lung cancer in 2016. I’ve really enjoyed getting out and about as part of the HNC challenge, taking a break from a computer screen is really good for my mental and physical well-being. Signing up to the Walk all Over Cancer challenge will keep me focussed in lockdown, as even when the HNC challenge has ended, I will need to keep my activity levels up to prepare for March!”
Kam Rogerson, Assistant Principal says: “Today we celebrated reaching almost half way in our challenge! I’m really pleased to hear that Sophie has enjoyed taking part in our Huddersfield to Huddersfield (Jamaica) challenge so much that she has chosen to set herself a new personal challenge for March and will be raising valuable funds for Cancer Research UK as part of this. As a College, we are so proud of how our students are turning lockdown into positive opportunities to invest in themselves whilst helping others – well done to Sophie for doing both and helping to walk all over cancer!”
