Huddersfield New College has revealed that Musical Theatre students have recently enjoyed some unique opportunities in lockdown to both enhance their skills and knowledge, and to help them to take care of their mental health and well-being.
The first virtual session was with West End and TV star Charlotte Scally, a London-based actress and dancer whose musical theatre credits include Nice Work If You Can Get It (Upstairs at the Gatehouse), The Bodyguard and So You Think you can Dance?
Students were able to join a special pre-recorded online workshop where Charlotte demonstrated some key dance techniques, and shared more about how she has built a successful career as a dancer and actress. This was interactive, and as it was pre-recorded, students could pause it to revisit particular techniques.
This was followed by a different type of virtual workshop that helped students understand how to care for their mind and bodies. Ellie Chitham led health and well-being sessions for all our Muscial Theatre students, helping them to understand how to care for both body and mind through yoga. Students really enjoyed this session. Student Alanis said: “thank you that was so helpful and calming!” and Cameron asked “Can we do this every week?”
Cat John, Teacher of Dance commented: “Our virtual online workshop with Charlotte Scally received some fantastic feedback. Charlotte has of course excelled in her career as an actress and a dancer, and our students really enjoyed being able to learn more about this and of course loved receiving some dance tutoring! Charlotte demonstrated a few of the techniques she uses as a professional performer, helping students to grow their skills. Many of our young people intend to pursue performing arts as a career, and this can be demanding on both the body and mind. Our young performers need to look after both their physical and mental well-being and our session with Ellie helped them understand how yoga can support them to be happy and healthy, helping to equip them for the future. We are of course looking forward to resuming face to face learning next week, but we are very proud of how our learning has continued during lockdown through innovative opportunities such as these.”
