Throughout lockdown Huddersfield New College has been encouraging students to invest in their future by undertaking virtual work experience – and one student is now set to really stand out from the crowd after impressing hosts at HFW, a leading Law firm.
Year 13 student Sadia Shahid was supported by our in house Careers and Work Placement team to secure a virtual work placement offer at the prestigious organisation after expressing an interest in one of the opportunities on offer. Sadia successfully secured a week long virtual placement which saw her taking part in a range of virtual opportunities and workshops on topics ranging from breaking into the profession, to the different opportunities available from legal services for the business sector, to becoming a Barrister and an in-house Lawyer. Sadia was also able to learn more about the Quadrant Chambers, and enjoyed Q&A with real-life professionals who work at HFW.
At the end of the week the students were asked to present on their experiences and Sadia received a special surprise – having impressed the CEO, she has been invited to join HFW’s new Mentoring programme. This will see Sadia being supported during her degree studies with a chance to learn more about HFW and be supported by those working in the field. This will hopefully help Sadia to have the competitive edge, and with this knowledge and experience, put Sadia at an advantage when applying for one of HFWs highly prestigious training contracts.
It has been a journey for Sadia who joined HNC on a Level 2 Business programme, and is now in her second year of studying BTEC Business and Law. Sadia is planning to go to university to study Law, and is considering offers from the University of York, Huddersfield and Sheffield.
Sadia says: “I absolutely loved the virtual work experience and the week ended with me leading our team presentation which we gave to about 40 different people from HFW including the CEO and Lawyers. I was surprised to be asked to stay on the call at the end, and even more surprised to be told that the CEO was really impressed and would like to invite me and another student to join their upcoming Mentoring Programme. This is going to be an incredible opportunity, not only will I be supported to get a head start on becoming a Solicitor, it will also give me a better chance of securing a training contract in my second year through a more detailed understanding of the business, the culture and of course, what it takes to be a successful Lawyer. HFW receive thousands of application per training contract place, so taking part in this virtual work experience really has opened some new and exciting doors for me."
Natalie Kuszyk, Teacher of Business comments: “Sadia has been a real journey since joining us as a Level 2 Business student nearly three years ago and it has been an absolute pleasure to see how her work ethic has turned her from a quiet, shy student who didn’t say much in class to a confident and determined one impressing CEOs! Sadia has been so committed to succeeding in her studies, and securing this amazing opportunity with HFW is a real testament to that. We are all incredibly proud and wish her every success as she continues to pursue her ambitions.”
