Huddersfield New College is delighted to announce that A Level student student Courtney has reached the grand finals of the National Poetry by Heart Competition.
Poetry by Heart is a national poetry competition, where students from across the country are asked to choose two poems from a specially curated anthology and recite them by heart in front of peers and judges. The winning students’ performances are then submitted to the Poetry by Heart judging panel, who select the best performers who are then invited to perform their poems in front of top UK poets at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, where the new Poetry By Heart national champions will be crowned.
This year, three students from the College, Courtney, Nicholas and Scarlet, took part in this challenging competition in a special virtual event that saw the three perform their poems to the College's judges. Courtney chose to perform Remembrance (Emily Bronte) and The Lost Woman (Patricia Beer), Nicholas performed I Started Early- Took my Dog (Emily Dickenson) and My Father in a White Spacesuit (Yehuda Amichai) and Scarlet opted for Strange Hells (Ivor Gurney) and The Ballad of Reading Gaol (Oscar Wilde). The judges were impressed by the students’ performances, all of whom performed their poems with great accuracy and feeling. Courtney’s performance stood out to the judges as she really connected to the emotion in the poetry, bringing an element of authenticity to her performance. Courtney’s performances not only wowed our judges, they also impressed the Poetry by Heart judges who were delighted to offer her a place at the 2021 grand finals.
All students who took part in the competition were rewarded with a certificate and a book voucher, provided by Read, an independent book store in Holmfirth. Samantha Daley, Literacy Champion, comments “Participating in the Poetry by Heart competition is one of the highlights of our literacy programme. Taking part is a huge commitment for our students, and I am so proud of them for their performances. It was no easy feat selecting this year’s HNC champion, as each student performed their poems admirably, and the level of competition this year was incredible high. Well done to Courtney for not only securing the title of HNC Poetry by Heart Champion, but for also securing a place at the Grand Finals. I wish her all the best for the next stage in the competition. Thanks go to James and Louise at Read Holmfirth for their support with the competition”.
