June is national Pride Month, a month of celebration and recognition for LGBTQ+ communities across the globe. In honour of Pride Month, Huddersfield New College is delighted to reveal a ‘Pride’ logo, which will be displayed on social media platforms for the remainder of the month as a visible reminder of our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.
Supporting our LGBTQ+ community here at HNC is just one of the many essential services we provide for our young people, and this support is available throughout the year. From ensuring our LGBTQ+ community have a safe and inclusive weekly meeting which offers staff and peer support, to taking part in annual events such as LGBT+ History Month, to proactively working with partners such as yOUTh Kirklees, Proud Terriers, Kick it Out and Stonewall, our support is far reaching, helping our LGBTQ+ community to feel welcomed and supported throughout their time at College.
During the pandemic, we have proactively adapted the support that we offer our LGBTQ+ students. In a year where isolation from peers has proven challenging for our young people, we have worked harder than ever before to ensure that our LGBTQ+ community have been listened to and supported.

Rebecca Charlton, Student Welfare Manager, comments “during the pandemic, our weekly LGBTQ+ group took place online via MS Teams to ensure our LGBTQ+ students continued to have a safe space where they could meet with peers and access bespoke support. These sessions ran throughout the holidays during the first lockdown when restrictions were at their most severe- a lifeline for many of our students. Students were also given access to a range of interactive events outside of the weekly college group, supported by The Brunswick Centre’s yOUTth outreach team, such as virtual bingo, a virtual escape room and a movie afternoon where they watched ‘Pride’ (a 2014 film based on the true story of London-based gay and lesbian activists who lent their support to striking miners in 1984 Wales). LGBTQ+ activity packs were sent out to students who requested one, and our LGBTQ+ group members have also had access to specialised remote one-to-one sessions throughout the pandemic, as part of our wider student well-being provision. I am proud to work at a College which goes above and beyond to support its LGBTQ+ community and I’m delighted that we are able to support Pride Month so visibly with our special logo”
Due to the current restrictions we are sadly unable to host an event within College this year, though there are still ways you can get involved with this year’s pride later in the summer within our local community:
