Huddersfield New College has revealed that the College community has smashed the latest HNC Strava challenge target. Over the last term the College community has been running, walking, cycling and wheeling in all weathers in an attempt to complete a daunting 9493 miles – the distance between Halifax, UK and Halifax, Australia.

During lockdown and the ongoing easing of restrictions, HNC students have been able to access a range of Covid-19 secure activities and opportunities.  These have been designed to support students' mental and physical well-being, and help them to stay healthy and active.

Following the success of an initial Strava challenge, the College introduced its biggest challenge yet with the Halifax UK to Halifax, Australia. Today the miles have been counted up, and an amazing 10,000 miles have been completed – 500 miles over target! Challenge prize winners are currently being selected, and winners will be announced in due course.

Kam Rogerson, Assistant Principal comments: “We know lockdown has been tough, and as a College we have worked to help our community stay busy and focussed during all levels of restrictions. All of our activities have supported our community to understand why looking after their bodies and minds is critical to their well-being. Our first Strava challenge – to complete the distance from Huddersfield to Huddersfield (Jamaica) - was a resounding success.”

“Our community asked for an even bigger challenge and we set the bar high with our next! It is unbelievable that we have clocked up 10,000 miles in just a few short weeks. Students and staff have been out in all weathers, sharing their tips and ideas in the Strava groups. As we end this academic year, we very much look forward to launching our new enrichment offer on our return in September. Although we are hopefully looking forward to normality then, our Strava challenge has been incredibly popular, and we are considering where in the world we may be able to ‘travel’ to next!”
