Last week, A Level Media Studies students from Huddersfield New College took part in a Journalism and Media visit day at the University of Huddersfield to explore the career opportunities on offer in these competitive and cutting-edge industries.

The visit, organised by Media Studies teacher Gary Eastwood, saw 34 students visit the University of Huddersfield campus and take part in a range of interactive activities which tested and developed their skills, and supported their study progression.

As part of the visit, the students took part in stimulating, hands-on break-out sessions. These included a TV Studio session where they were tasked with producing a local news bulletin, and a detailed micro analysis of the opening of hit TV series Peaky Blinders to gain a deeper understanding of how media language communicates meaning to audiences.

The students also participated in a magazine design session run by PR & Journalism Lecturer Jenny Gibson. This informative session was particularly beneficial to the Year 13 students as it linked closely with the coursework element of second year A Level Media Studies. This experience helped give them the confidence that their current coursework submissions are of a high standard.

On how the day benefitted his students, Gary said: “The day was a fantastic opportunity for both Year 12 and 13 students to think about their next steps and how A Level Media Studies provides an excellent pathway into Higher Education. The University put together a really engaging programme which allowed them to think about the various specialisms they could pursue – the TV session certainly showed we have some future presenters in our midst!

“Not only was the day useful in giving students insight into the Journalism and Media provision, it also allowed the students to experience what university life is all about through a campus tour and dining in the refectory with current students. We think it is really important that our students have a clear vision and understanding of why they are doing our course and where it can lead them, and this day was a success in giving students a greater insight into their career pathways and aspirations.”
