Huddersfield New College has shared more about how a visit from Detective Superintendent Tanya Wilkins has helped to inspire future members of the Police force, and raised awareness of the wider role of the Police beyond enforcing the Law. Detective Superintendent Wilkins joined HNC to host a a series of insightful sessions designed to support students’ understanding of how the Police work to help society's most vulnerable. She also shared more about her own inspiring journey within the Police.

During her time at the College she visited one of our Criminology classes, where students were able to share their initial ideas for their Campaign for Change project work. This national campaign by the Children's Society aims to achieve big social changes which will improve the lives of those who need it the most. This valuable experience gave them the opportunity to get feedback from an expert and gain a real life insight into how the Police not only enforce the Law, but support some of the most in need in society.

Later in the day, Tanya delivered an inspiring talk to a group of students who are considering pursuing careers within Policing. During this talk, Tanya spoke of her progression from trainee to the country’s first black female Detective Superintendent. This was followed by an open and honest Q&A session, covering topics such as progression routes into Policing, salaries, essential career skills, pastoral care and work-life balance.

Speaking about her visit, Tanya said: “I had an absolutely fantastic time at Huddersfield New College talking to different students from a range of diverse backgrounds about my personal experiences and the different roles within Policing. They asked some thought provoking questions and made me think about ways we can increase public knowledge of the varied work that we do. Hopefully I have inspired them to consider a role within Policing."

Today’s visit forms part of the College’s wider Diversity Week activities, co-ordinated by our Director of Equality, Inclusion and Engagement, Erika Montgomery. The week has seen our Diversity Team handing out pronoun badges, raising donations for our two Charities of the Year and encouraging students to sign our anti-bullying pledge and add ‘One Kind Word’ to our Tree of Kindness.

Reflecting on Tanya’s visit, Erika said, "It was an honour to welcome our prestigious guest speaker to Huddersfield New College today. Detective Superintendent Tanya Wilkins delivered engaging and inspirational talks and Q&A sessions with students regarding her role within West Yorkshire Police and careers within the Police service. Students were able to gain a real insight into how the Police not only help keep society safe, but also play a huge role in transforming lives. We very much look forward to welcoming Tanya back to Huddersfield New College again later this year."
