Here at HNC students with the academic potential to secure places at world leading universities are enrolled on to the XL Programme. This offers them a unique package of support, experiences and opportunities to help them ensure that they have the skills, experience and cultural capital world leading universities are looking for. As part of this students can access a series of regular lectures on a diverse range of topics. These are designed to stretch and challenge knowledge outside of the classroom and support students who are aiming for university places at the most competitive institutions, including Oxbridge.

XL students recently enjoyed an inspiring lecture with Emma Laws, Teacher of Drama and Theatre Studies and professional Motivational Speaker, exploring the power of presentation and how building their public speaking skills will support them to achieve their career ambitions. Emma, who also works with local universities to develop their undergraduates, delivered a motivational lecture that had students considering their use of language and vocabulary, their stage presence, and saw them exploring what is and isn’t important when presenting ideas. Students were encouraged to think more about their authentic selves, and worked on exercises to help them build on self-confidence and combat nerves when speaking in front of an audience. This engaging session was followed by a bespoke workshop which focused on interview skills and teaching students how to sell themselves when applying for competitive university places at work-leading universities.

Catherine Cushnie, Assistant Principal for Student Development, comments “the ability to speak confidently and authentically to both a large audience and on a one-to-one basis is an essential life skill, and Emma delivered an inspirational lecture that really had our XL students exploring their use of language and vocabulary through a range of unique exercises. Our XL students study a broad range of subjects and are aiming to progress to a multitude of different careers. Learning the art of presentation and building on their public speaking skills is something that will help them to stand out from the crowd when planning their next steps after College”.
