Talented sports students from Huddersfield New College competed in the AOC National Championships at Nottingham University last weekend, and proudly came home with Gold and Bronze medals, as they helped the Yorkshire and Humberside Region to finish first in the Badminton Competition and third in the Tennis Competition respectively.
Hannah Boden (Badminton), Emily Young (Tennis), Elliott Thompson (Cross Country), Harry Boothroyd (Golf), Tom Pearson (Golf) and Victoria Kelly (Golf) battled against talented sports performers from colleges across England and Wales during the three day event.
From an individual point of view, Hannah Boden and Emily Young stood out, as they were unbeaten in their respective sports all weekend!
Matt Burton, the College’s ‘Talented Athlete Support’ Champion, accompanied our students to the Championships and commented: ‘All of our athletes performed to a high level over the weekend and can be proud of their achievements. They were a credit to the College. Myself, Jamie Marsden (Head of Academies) and Pete Lombard (Sport for All Champion) thoroughly enjoyed watching them compete at a national level’
The South East Region became the new overall winners of the Wilkinson Sword trophy, wrestling it from local rivals, the South West, in a highly competitive weekend.
More than 1600 college students took part in this year’s National Championships, now in its 39th year, across a series of incredible sporting facilities, including the University of Nottingham's David Ross Sports Village, Trent Bridge, Nottingham Wildcats Arena, Morley Hayes Golf Club and Nottingham Tennis Centre.
The athletes competed across 13 different sports, including football, squash, hockey, basketball and cricket.
