On the 25th May 2017, Huddersfield New College hosted a series of taster workshops in IT for 81 year 9 pupils from Salendine Nook Academy who are currently studying Computing at the school.

In these workshops, the Salendine Nook pupils got the chance to build network cables that they could take home; they got to use the College’s Lego Robots, which they had to programme to follow a course; and they were given the opportunity to produce their own Computer game, using the Greenput Java programme and its’ characters including Sammy the Seal, Fred the Fish and Mobster the Lobster!

All pupils were also given a tour of the College and were introduced to the College’s Enjoy Sport programme.

Such workshops allow year 9 students to experience life in a Sixth Form College and they give pupils a clear idea of what studying IT or Computing involves at A Level.

The Salendine Nook Year 9 pupils really enjoyed the workshops, especially how creative they were, and left the College at the end of the day saying how much  they were looking forward to studying IT and/or Computing at A level.
