Earlier this term, the Study Centre hosted their annual ESOL Awards ceremony. Four students who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to developing their skills, in both the use and appreciation of the English Language, were chosen by the Study Centre team to be the recipients of these awards. The awards were presented by the Principal, Angela Williams.

The Award winners were:

Kazuyoshi Maruta

Kaz came to the UK in 2014 and enrolled at the College in 2015. English is Kaz’s third language, after Japanese and Spanish! Kaz has just completed the Extended Diploma in IT and has also secured a pass grade in GCSE English Language, and these qualifications are his passport to an IT degree at Leeds Beckett University, which he will start in September.

Jaweria Hayat

Jaweria began her academic career at HNC in 2014, when she enrolled onto a Btec First Diploma in Science. She has just completed the Extended Diploma in Science and this is her springboard to the highly competitive Radio Therapy degree at Sheffield Hallam University. Alongside her studies in Science, Jaweira also secured a Grade A in GCSE English Language!

Lashminder Kaur

Lashminder too has only been a resident in the UK since 2012. She started at the College in 2014 on a Level 2 programme. She is moving on from the College this year to an apprenticeship in Accounting, having just successfully completed the Extended Diploma in Business. She secured her pass grade in GCSE English Language by improving two grades within a year.

Vanda Kovacs-Nagy

Vanda arrived in the UK in 2012. She too started her academic career at the College on the Level 2 programme. After completing the Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care and the Extended Project Qualification, Vanda will take up a place at John Moore’s University in Liverpool, the next step towards her ambition to become a Forensic Psychologist. During her time with us, Vanda achieved a Grade B in GCSE English Language.

Chris Hepworth, the College’s ESOL tutor, concluded the Awards ceremony by wishing all of our very worthy Award winners well in their future learning beyond Huddersfield New College.
