Huddersfield New College offers students a wide range of exciting extra-curricular opportunities through the ‘Futures and Honours’ programmes.
These programmes have been created to ensure that high achieving students have the skills and attributes world-class universities and the Best 100 Companies are looking for, and aims to inspire them to seriously consider these world leading destinations.
The programmes offer intensive support for applications to Oxbridge and Russell Group universities, as well as to world leading Companies.
Both programmes includes a variety of trips, visiting speakers and unique opportunities to help students aim high and consider all of the different progression routes available to them.
Student Ivy Oldroyd is enrolled on to the Honours programme, and is currently being supported with her applications to Oxbridge and to the University of Warwick to read Further Maths. Although Ivy is currently considering a career in teaching, the programme allowed her to participate in a special ‘Summer School’ at Bristol University to help her to explore the doors her chosen subject can open up to her beyond teaching.
Ivy explains more: “I took part in a Summer School with the Engineering Design Trust. I thought engineering was essentially ‘men building bridges’ but the project showed me how incorrect my perception was and my eyes were fully opened to the very varied types of jobs on offer in engineering.”
“During the Summer School, we were placed into teams and challenged to build a working robot. We had a lot of problems to start with, but we worked out as a team what was wrong with the very long and complex computer coding that would make the robot work. I was really proud that we were able to do this. And the challenge of doing so really improved my maths skills.”
Ivy’s passion is Mathematics, and as part of the programme she is completing an Extended Project Qualification. She has also been given the chance to develop her confidence and public speaking skills through a range of Student Ambassador activities.
Huddersfield New College passionately believes there should be no limits on what a student can achieve. Ivy is a shining example of this, achieving highly at AS and predicted to do so at A Level. And in the future, her world is full of possibilities.
Information about the programme will be available at the next Open Event on Thursday 19th October, 6.00pm – 9.00pm.
