Huddersfield New College has announced that student Harry Newman has secured a three year first team contract with the Leeds Rhinos.
Harry is part of the College’s Talented Athlete Support (TASS) programme, which supports talented athletes to achieve their sporting ambitions whilst securing their qualifications. The programme includes bespoke support so that students can meet their training commitments and manage their studies. This includes flexible learning patterns and management of deadlines so that students can combine College work with their often demanding training schedules.
Harry is studying BTEC Sport and Exercise Science, and his three year contract follows a number of successes including a Leeds Rhino debut at Wigan in July this year. This made him the first professional Rugby League player born in the 21st century to feature in a top flight game.
Matthew Burton, who heads up the TASS programme said: “We would like to congratulate Harry on this amazing news, and making history with his signing! The TASS programme aims to ensure young people like Harry can fulfil their potential in both their sport and their academic studies. We are all looking forward to seeing Harry awarded his squad number next season.”
Harry Newman says: “The TASS programme has provided a fantastic support for myself and other talented athletes across the College. Under the programme I have been supported to focus on both my training and my college work and I could not have done both without this help. Whilst I am of course incredibly excited about my signing, I am also pleased that I will gain qualifications that will help me in the future. I would recommend HNC to all those who want to combine a sport with gaining their qualifications.”
