48 Learning Support Centre Our Learning Support Centre (LSC) supports all students, irrespective of academic grade profile, ambitions or learning support needs. The LSC offers a range of services, including a bespoke Exams Support Programme which helps students to aim for a higher than predicted grade. The team also arrange and implement Exams Access Arrangements (including additional time), support within the classroom, and support for learning needs. These include, but are not limited to, sensory impairments, physical disabilities and English as a second language. The LSC focuses on self-advocacy, empowering and helping you to communicate what you need from HNC to ensure we can support you to shape your own future. Carly Brocklehurst “During my time at HNC I have gained confidence in myself and my abilities. My experience has been incredibly positive, and the College ensured that my transition from school to College was seamless – I felt comfortable from the moment I started. There are also so many people who will help you to prepare for your future – I really benefitted from the support of the careers team.” Studied: A Level History A Level Media Studies A Level Photography Destination: Photography at the University of Huddersfield | Support at HNC | Contents

50 Join Us The application process depends upon the school an applicant attends. Our website contains lots of information about the interview process including the questions you’ll be asked. Click here to read more Applying to HNC Attend a 11 – 16 school in Kirklees? The majority of schools in Kirkless opt into the centralised ‘Get Into’ application system. Your school will speak to you about this, and arrange for your application to be submitted with all the information we require, including your reference and attendance information. Attend a school outside of Kirklees or a school not using the Get Into application portal? You’ll apply online at www.huddnewcoll.ac.uk. Ahead of an interview being booked you’ll be contacted and asked to submit a copy of your latest school report showing your predicted grades, behaviour and attendance. Important information Applications close on Friday 2 February 2024. Your application must reach us by this date. Information about your interview In most cases an application and submission of supporting evidence will lead to an invitation to an interview. From time to time we may not offer an applicant an interview.

51 | Join Us | Contents What happens at interview? We know that coming along to a College interview can be both exciting and nerve-wracking – sometimes a mixture of the two! It is important to understand that the main focus of the interview is making sure your study programme is the right one for you and your ambitions. We also spend time ensuring that there is a good fit between you as a student and the College’s values. It is important to understand that there are no competency based questions or scores. Your interview will include the following: A significant part of your interview will be dedicated to looking at your application choices, and if these are a good fit for your career ambitions. We’ll also check that your predicted grades meet the entry criteria for the course. If they don’t, we’ll discuss possible suitable alternatives We’ll also review your attendance, behaviour and school reference. We need to ensure that you are in a position to meet our ABC expectations, and can only consider making a conditional offer where a student can demonstrate that they are ready for the demands of full time, post-16 study. If your reference identifies that your behaviour, attendance or commitment is below our criteria this will not necessarily mean you won’t be offered a place, but you should expect to discuss this with your interviewer You will also be asked a question about how you align with the College’s vision and values. This is because we want to ensure you understand what is expected of you as a HNC student You’ll be given a decision at interview (unless we require additional information before we can decide e.g. an updated school report demonstrating your grades have changed). In most cases this is a conditional offer of a place – meaning you have a place at HNC as long as you achieve the published entry criteria on GCSE Results Day Our team are friendly and welcoming – the interview is all about making sure HNC is the right environment for you and your ambitions. It is of course also your opportunity to ask any questions! Click here to apply now

The NC buses are a subsidised service, and are exclusively for the use of HNC students with a valid termly or annual bus pass. Our bursary scheme may be able to support students with the cost of travel to HNC. The route map opposite shows the NC routes available, and the current pick up times. All buses depart HNC at the end of the College day at 4.25pm and these routes are completed in reverse. Public transport HNC is around 8 -10 minutes from Huddersfield town centre. Frequent buses operated by local providers run directly outside the College. This includes the direct shuttle service. Please note that the College does not subsidise or run this shuttle bus service, therefore the availability is determined by First Bus. Travelling by car Limited onsite parking is available for students. Students can apply for a permit for the student carpark. Permits are issued on a termly basis, to ensure all students have the opportunity of obtaining a permit. Where the requests for permits exceed the number available, students are selected via a ballot process. @huddnewcoll | Useful information | Contents
