Inspiring The Next Generation Of Sports Leaders

HNC’s Sport students have recently been working within the community to undertake a mentorship programme, supporting pupils from high schools across Kirklees to gain their own accreditation as Sports Leaders as part of a leadership day run in conjunction with the Pennine Sports Partnership.
Pupils from All Saints Catholic Academy, Colne Valley High School, Holmfirth High, Honley High, North Huddersfield Trust School and Salendine Nook High School joined our qualified Sports Leader students at HNC for this special workshop, aimed at developing the pupil’s leadership qualities and working towards gaining their own Sports Leaders Awards. These are nationally recognised qualifications that build essential life skills such as effective communication and organisation, and once qualified, enables students to lead and run sports activities for others within their community.
Later in the day, the College’s Sports Leaders ran an event for local primary pupils, putting their qualifications to the test in a fun-packed event that saw children from Lindley Junior School, Moorlands Primary School and Reinwood Primary school take part in a variety of sporting activities.
Alex Potts, Teacher of Sport, comments “As a Sports Leadership Academy, our Applied Sport and A Level Physical Education students are encouraged to undertake their Sports Leaders qualifications as an addition to their academic studies. These qualifications not only enrich their learning, they also help our students to develop life-long skills that will benefit them far beyond the classroom. It’s also a fantastic way for our students to give back to their local communities by running events like this for local school pupils. Thank you to the Pennine Sports Partnership who worked with us to deliver today’s event”.
