CARING WITH COMPASSION: HNC STUDENTS LEARN MORE ABOUT WORKING IN A HOSPICE SETTING
11.10.2023Students from HNC’s Applied Health and Social Care course recently visited the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice to learn more about the vital role the children’s hospice plays in the local community, and learn more about the rewarding job opportunities available within a hospice based setting.
Throughout the Applied Health and Social Care qualification, students explore the wide variety of the roles and responsibilities held by professionals within the field, helping them to gain a deeper insight in to this important and diverse sector. To underpin the lessons learnt in the classroom, students had the invaluable opportunity to visit a local children’s hospice to gain first hand experience of the difficult but crucial work undertaken by the Forget Me Not team.
During the visit, students were invited to meet the team to find out more about their individual roles, and how the team supports the families they work alongside. The group were also invited to tour the extensive facilities which include a cinema, a sensory room and a hydrotherapy pool. Kelly Dungworth, Regional Fundraiser, commented “The students were an absolute pleasure to show around. They were extremely well behaved and inquisitive and asked plenty of questions about the day to day running of the hospice.”
Trips and visits are just one of the ways in which we enrich students’ wider learning of their chosen subject. Zoe Potts, Faculty Lead for Health and Sports, comments “The Health and Social Care sector is incredibly large- not only do many millions of people work within the field, but all of us at some stage in our lives will use a related service. Our students studying Applied Health and Social Care often have progression plans that include working within the field, and opportunities like this allow them to gain a deeper understanding of the importance of services such as the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice, and be inspired about how they can progress to similar roles in the future. I am very proud of how our students upheld our College values during their visit, behaving impeccably and with compassion. I would also like to thank Forget Me Not Hospice for inviting us to such an important and informative session”.
