WHAM! BANG! ZAP! APPLIED BUSINESS STUDENTS INSPIRED ABOUT THE POSSIBILITIES OF SMALL BUSINESS OWNERSHIP

HNC’s Applied Business students recently experienced a day in the life of an independent business owner, visiting local comic book shop ‘Pages n Pixels’ run by Ross Denby, to discover more about the hard work that goes into running a successful business.

The Applied Business course at HNC is a hands-on and dynamic course that explores a wide range of Business principles, and the College’s links with local businesses underpins the lessons learnt in the classroom in a real-life context. As part of this and to support students in their Unit 1 ‘Exploring a Business’ module, the group visited ‘Pages n’ Pixels’, a comic store based in The Piece Hall in Halifax. Pages n’ Pixels- started in 2021 by Ross and his business partner, Gareth- is a successful comic book story that stocks a wide range of comics, graphic novels and pop culture, catering to a variety of tastes and interests across the generations.

During the visit, the group found out more about the comic book business, and how Ross and his business partner have built a community around their store that has helped to ensure that their business remains successful. The session also saw the students explore the Piece Hall, and how being part of a wider community of independent shops has further cemented the success of Pages n’ Pixels. Ross spoke candidly about the trials and tribulations of being an independent business owner, and how the shop has overcome the challenges faced by all small businesses by using innovative marketing techniques, capitalising on online sales, and building a community of like-minded people. As well as leaving the store with a deeper understanding of the work and passion required to run a successful business, the group were also able to choose a comic book to enjoy!

Matthew Kuszyk, Teacher of Business, comments “Many of our Applied Business students aspire to run their own business, and this insightful visit to a local successful independent comic book shop has genuinely opened their eyes to the passion and commitment it takes to be a successful small business owner. It was fascinating to find out more about Pages n’ Pixels journey and Ross’ passion for his business really shone through on the visit. This has certainly inspired and motivated our students to continue to work hard to achieve their ambitions!”
