THE RESULTS ARE IN: HNC CHARITIES OF THE YEAR ANNOUNCED
14.11.2023HNC has revealed that following a democratic vote the College will be supporting the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice and Save the Children as our Charities of the Year.
As part of last week’s UK Parliament Week students were invited to experience how voting could shape decisions by voting for the College’s charities of the year. Ballot boxes were placed in the Junction and our A Level Politics students manned the polling stations, and were available to highlight the information available about each of our charity ‘candidates.’ Every student at HNC was invited to vote for their first choice of national charity and their first choice of a local charity. The selection of charities students could vote for were also shaped via a democratic process, with our Student Council consulting with students to create the final shortlist our community voted from.
With a diverse list of worthwhile local and national charities, our two new charities won by a majority vote with Save the Children receiving 35.4% of the national charity votes and Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice securing 44.9% of the local charity votes. Together with our Student Council we will now be planning a number of events that will enable us to support both charities.
Emily Briggs, Enlighten Lead comments: “During UK Parliament Week we hosted a range of events and experiences that helped our young people to understand how by using their vote they are using their voice and playing their part in shaping the Britain they want to see. With an upcoming General Election, where many of our young people will legally be able to vote, UK Parliament Week was a great opportunity to explore why using your vote is so powerful. We were delighted to see so many students registering to vote last week, and then supporting our College to make a democratic decision regarding our chosen charities by voting. We are looking forward to supporting the vital work both of our chosen charities do over the coming months!”
