CRIMINAL JUSTICE IN ACTION: LAW STUDENTS EXPERIENCE LIFE IN COURT

Students from across the College’s A Level and Applied Law courses have recently taken part in an action-packed week of visits to Leeds Magistrate’s and Crown Courts, gaining a first-hand experience of the Criminal Justice System and the roles of those who work within it.

In A Level and Applied Law, students develop their knowledge of the Criminal Justice System, exploring a range of theories and real-life cases to prepare them for a related career. HNC’s Law students recently had the opportunity to bring their learning to life by experiencing a day at the Leeds Magistrate’s and Crown Courts during an enlightening week that saw the group learn more about how the court system works. As well as observing the many essential roles of those who work at the courts from the Judges to the legal advisors, the group also discovered the diverse range of cases seen, from theft to the supply of banned substances. While watching the cases heard in court, students were able to experience how the defence and prosecution teams delivered their cases and hear the evidence that juries must work with before making their decisions.

Claire Forest, Head of Faculty Social Sciences, comments “What a brilliant experience for our Law students. The opportunity to see the lessons learnt in the classroom brought to life in the courts has genuinely inspired our students and helped to further prepare them for a related career. The cases observed in court also relate directly to topics studied in their courses, so these visits are an essential part in preparing our students in becoming their best selves and achieving highly in their studies. I am incredibly proud of our students and the level of maturity and professionalism they demonstrated throughout the week. On our last day in the Magistrate’s Court, District Judge Holland commented that our students had been a credit to the College during the week of visits”.
