INSPIRING THE ENGINEERS OF THE FUTURE

Year 12 A Level Physics students have recently taken part in an engaging taster day with the University of Huddersfield’s School of Computing and Engineering to discover more about the vast array of the STEM based career possibilities available to them post-HNC.

The group spent the day at the University of Huddersfield’s School of Computing and Engineering department, which is renowned for its links to national and international industry, including Red Bull racing, who sponsor the school’s university racing car team. On the day, students could choose to take part in two specially designed workshops, which focused on topics including building a capacitor, testing tension, how wing design can affect flight and using ladder logic with a miniature conveyer. These hands-on sessions were followed by an insightful lecture delivered by Dr Leigh Fleming, who discussed the importance that engineering will play in the modern world, and how the courses available at the university are preparing the engineers of the future to deliver the skills and expertise needed to create innovation in engineering.

The group also enjoyed a tour of the school’s state-of-the-art facilities, including the in-house mechanical workshops, as well as a wider tour of the campus to discover more about life as a student at the University of Huddersfield.

Richard Howland, Teacher of Physics, comments: “As new and emerging technologies are developed, engineers are increasingly in demand. In this insightful visit to the University of Huddersfield, we discovered more about the vast array of undergraduate degree programmes our A Level Physics students can choose to progress to, and how those degrees can support a wide range of careers – including in the fast paced world of car racing! Our group really enjoyed taking part in these degree level workshops which have helped to provide a wider context to the lessons we learn in the classroom. Thank you to the University of Huddersfield for providing such an inspirational and educational day!”
