UN VOYAGE GLORIEUX: HNC STUDENTS SOAK UP FRENCH CULTURE

HNC French and English Language and Literature students have recently returned from an immersive trip to the French capital of Paris, where students soaked up the famous French culture and explored some of Paris’ most famous landmarks.

The group, who spent three nights in Paris, took part in the trip to support the content explored in their A Levels, with French students practicing their oral and comprehension skills, as well as learning more about the French culture they study throughout their qualification. English Language and Literature students were able to develop a wider understanding of ‘Paris’, one of the assessed anthologies students study as part of their subject, which explores ‘stories are waiting in Paris’ – an advert for the Eurostar service – and Rick Steve’s audio tour of the Louvre museum.

During the action-packed visit, students enjoyed a visit to Disneyland Paris, where the group took full advantage of the day, enjoying a range of hair-raising theme park rides and enjoying the iconic main parade. The group spent the following day in central Paris, starting off with a traditional French breakfast and then enjoying a 90 minute guided walking tour of Paris to experience some of the famous sights of the French capital, including of course, the Eiffel Tower! Next up for the group was a cruise on the river Seine, which provided a unique perspective of the history behind the city. Finally, the group enjoyed a visit to the Louvre, a national art museum which showcases some of the west’s best known examples of canonical pieces, including the world famous painting by Leonardo da Vinci, the Mona Lisa.

Throughout the trip, students were able to practise their French language skills with native speakers and discover more about French culture and history. The group also visited a range of traditional French restaurants where they experienced genuine French cuisine, ordering their meals in French and discovering the differences between dining out in France vs the UK.

Paul Edge, Teacher of Modern Foreign Languages, comments “What a fantastic trip! We were exceptionally lucky with the weather, enjoying glorious blue skies and plenty of sunshine throughout or time in Paris. It was wonderful for our students to explore this famous French city, and experience first hand the French culture, cuisine and history, building on the knowledge and skills developed in the classroom. There wasn’t much time for rest during our busy two days, but we did make the most of all the wonderful experiences Paris has to offer, with one student declaring “I will remember this trip for the rest of my life- it’s been amazing!”. Experiences such as this genuinely build our students’ cultural capital, and develop skills that will support them far beyond the classroom and their time at HNC. Thank you to our students who were excellent ambassadors of the College and who truly embodied our shared values”.
