CELEBRATING COLLEGE CULTURE: HNC COMES TOGETHER FOR WORLD DAY FOR CULTURAL DIVERSITY

On Tuesday 21 May, HNC joined organisations across the globe in celebrating ‘World Day for Cultural Diversity’, with a campus wide event where staff and students from across the College shared more about their heritage and took part in a range of cultural activities.

World Day for Cultural Diversity is a United Nations initiative that aims to promote greater dialogue and understanding between different cultures globally. The event, which highlights the many rich cultures from around the world, hopes to promote peace and sustainable development, making the world a fairer place to live and work, wherever you’re from.

HNC’s World Day for Cultural Diversity celebrated the rich heritages our staff and students identify with. Organised by a working student group and supported by the College’s Marketing team, the day consisted of a wide range of activities. Students and staff were asked to come to College wearing something that celebrated their culture, and were also asked to contribute to our world map, adding a pin to the country their family originated from or that they most identified with. With over 67 different countries and every single continent (barring Antarctica!) marked on the map, the map was a visual representation of our diverse College community.

Throughout the day, we also enjoyed a cultural playlist, curated by students and staff, that explored a wide range of world music, while henna and face painting stations located in the Junction offered students the opportunity to further celebrate their own and each other’s cultures. Our onsite caterer provided a ‘world food’ themed menu on the day, with food from Jamaica, South Africa, Korea, Thailand and Japan. Students and staff were invited to sample free sushi from our sushi station which proved to be a popular choice, with two choices of filling and a variety of authentic sauces and oils on offer.

Bradley Wallace, Communications Officer and event co-ordinator, comments “HNC is a College in which we have an incredibly diverse community, and our College values not only reflect this diversity, they also underpin how as a College community we are inclusive, and work collaboratively together to empower one another and shaping a better future for all. I am incredibly proud of our student group who worked hard to bring this event to life. It was brilliant to see so many members of our community celebrating their heritage while reflecting on the importance that this global day has on the world”.
