ALLIED HEALTH STUDENTS EXPLORE THEIR NEXT STEPS AND FUTURE CAREERS

Year 12 students from across HNC who are planning to progress to an allied health career have recently attended a hands-on taster day at York St John University to discover more about the wide range of progression opportunities available to them after completing their Level 3 studies.

Allied health professionals play a crucial role in the NHS, the UK’s biggest employer. There are 15 allied health professional roles, including roles such as physiotherapist, prosthetist, and therapeutic radiographer. Allied health professionals all have one thing in common: they play a vital part in treating, rehabilitating and improving the lives of patients, and work alongside a wider team of doctors and nurses, in a range of settings including hospitals and patient’s homes.

York St John University, who deliver a variety of allied health care undergraduate degree programmes, recently hosted an informative day for a group of students from across HNC’s diverse curriculum. During the visit, students were invited to find out more about the university and take part in a number of relevant workshops in the university’s state of the art facilities. On the day, the group experienced university level allied health sessions in physiotherapy and occupational therapy, as well as taking part in a range of nursing workshops. The group worked in the university’s hospital wards, using medical grade equipment to practise a range of techniques such as CPR. The group were also able to explore the university campus and hear more about the admissions process, and discover more about the crucial roles that allied health professionals play in keeping us fit and healthy.

Jess Butterfield, Senior Progress Tutor, comments “Throughout our Aspire programme we support our students to thoroughly explore their progression options. This was a particularly beneficial trip for our students who are hoping to progress to an allied health, or related, role in the future. With 15 different roles and over 80,000 employees, allied health care provides a wide variety of opportunities, and this enlightening visit to York st John University has really helped our students to discover which direction they would like to focus on as they approach the university application process.  Thank you to the university for providing a brilliant experience for our students!”
