CULTURE IN CHOREOGRAPHY: HNC STUDENTS ENJOY BHARATANATYAM WORKSHOP

HNC’s Performing Arts department recently enjoyed a special workshop in celebration of World Religion Day, with the College’s Applied Dance and Musical Theatre students taking part in a hands-on dance masterclass focused on the ancient art form of Bharatanatyam.

Bharatanatyam is classical Indian dance that originated in Tamil Nadu, India, and has deep religious and spiritual significance in Hinduism and Jainism. In this special workshop, led by HNC student and Bharatanatyam dancer, Vikram, Applied Dance and Musical Theatre students discovered more about the religious and cultural history of the dance, which can date its history back to 500 BC, and how the dance represents Hindu mythology and pays respect to Hindu deities. Vikram also shared more about his journey to ‘Arangetram’, his debut solo performance that celebrates the end of years of rigorous training under a guru.

After learning about the historical and religious significance of Bharatanatyam, the group then took part in a hands-on workshop, learning a variety of moves and techniques that are representative of the dance, including the stylistic ‘sign language’ based on gestures of hands, eye movement and facial expressions.

At the end of the session, which Vikram planned in his own time, he answered questions about his experiences and shared more about the work and dedication that learning Bharatanatyam demands. Cat John, Teacher of Dance, comments “Vikram is an exceptionally talented Bharatanatyam dancer who has undertaken years of training to reach the level he performs at. His passion for dance was evident from his excellent presentation, and his peers enjoyed learning more about the cultural, historical, and religious significance of his performances. Across Applied Dance and Musical Theatre, students take part in a variety of choreographed performances, and this workshop stretched and challenged the entire group to use the skills that they have honed on stage in a new way. Thank you to Vikram for hosting a truly enlightening workshop for World Religion Day!”
