FUTURE MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF LORDS? LIFE PEER LORD YOUNG INSPIRES A LEVEL POLITICS STUDENTS

HNC’s A Level Politics students have recently taken part in an enlightening virtual session with member of the House of Lords, Lord George Young of Cookham, who shared more about his long career in UK politics.

Lord Young spent 41 years as a Conservative MP, serving under Margaret Thatcher right through to Boris Johnson, before being created Life Peer in 2015. During this special virtual talk, Lord Young gave a brief overview of his career in politics, sharing more about his service in a variety of cabinet positions, before following up with a fascinating insight into the House of Lords, from the day in a life of a peer, to the processes that take place in the house.

This informative session was followed by a Q&A where our Politics students asked some insightful and direct questions ranging from “Did you ever see yourself becoming a Lord before being appointed?” to “How do you feel about there being an unelected chamber in the UK?”. Throughout the session our students engaged in healthy debate with Lord Young, exploring a range of difficult topics in a respectful and insightful manner. The session, which has further motivated our students to aim for the highest offices in UK politics ended with the comment from Lord Young that “maybe when some of you are in the House of Commons, you’ll sort out these issues in a way my generation has been unable to”.

Nina Attridge, Teacher of Politics commented “Our A Level Politics students are incredibly engaged with the UK’s political scene; undoubtedly, it is an exciting time to be studying Politics with a General Election looming on the horizon. Understanding the wider political systems in the UK helps our students to contextualise the lessons learnt in the classroom, and sessions such as Lord Young’s virtual talk encourage our students to explore the wide range of roles and careers their Politics qualifications can take them. I am genuinely impressed by the level of questions our students put to Lord Young, and would like to extend my thanks to him for spending the time to provide a range of in-depth and enlightening responses”
