Huddersfield New College has shared how the Charity Challenge enrichment team are hosting a fun Secret Santa gift exchange, to support the RSPCA as part of the College’s wider festive fundraising efforts.

As a College community we work continuously to give back to others, and during the festive season this has a particular significance for our staff and students. Our Early Years department is also currently busy collecting presents for the Salvation Army’s toy appeal, with an ever growing pile of gifts under the tree for local children who might not otherwise receive a gift this Christmas.

We are also collecting for the Welcome Centre foodbank and hope to make a big contribution this Christmas. Students and staff can pop a donation in any of the bins around College.

The festive season is also of course an opportunity to have fun, and the Charity Challenge team are running a secret Santa gift exchange. Students can donate a £1 to the RSPCA to take part in the scheme, and drop a small gift into the Social Sciences office. Gifts will then be exchanged in the last week of term.  The RSPCA is the Charity Challenge group’s charity of the term and recently the group raised money for the charity through a Cute Pet Competition. HNC is passionate about the benefits of giving which have been proven to include lower stress levels, a more positive mood and greater happiness and satisfaction, amongst others. Students are encouraged to give back in a variety of ways, including through giving their time, which of course also supports students to learn new skills too. The Charity Challenge enrichment group provides students with a chance to get more involved in our work, and grow their skills in areas such as marketing and event planning.

Zoe Martin, who leads the Charity Challenge enrichment comments: “Our students are really proud to be part of a College that cares. Our Charity Challenge group provides an opportunity for students to learn more about successful fundraising, and really get stuck into activities where they can come up with ideas and successfully market these. Following our Cute Pet Competition, we are running our Secret Santa Gift exchange – a fabulous way to get in the festive spirit, and experience the joy of supporting a charity and giving a gift!”
