HNC Library has been working in partnership with The Reading Agency to run a literacy boosting scheme at the college called Reading Ahead (formerly the Six Book Challenge). It involves encouraging students to sign up to read and to review six items. Students were further encouraged to sign up and to read by the chance to win a Kindle Paper White.
Over 20 students completed the challenge: our best completion rate yet!
Rebecca Hill, College Librarian, remarked on this success “I am very proud of the students who completed. They have not only read six items but have pushed their boundaries to read items that they wouldn’t have otherwise considered, such as comics, graphic novels or biographies. Hopefully all have established the healthy habit of reading and will continue to do so for the great joy it can bring.”
Student Iqra Zafar had this to say about his participation in Reading Ahead:
“It’s great. It helps you to read more and it improves your English. Those who didn’t do it are missing out on doing something useful.”
Aaminah Essabhai commented, “Reading helped me to de-stress.”
Abigail Morrison agreed, saying, “Reading gives you a way to relax.”
The simple act of reading six books is what Joshua Ellis liked best about the scheme.
If you would like to take part in our next Reading Ahead challenge, watch out for the invite at the start of the next academic year.
